Hide the right Sidebar in a single post?

Dear Mehmet,

I have a small question to ask, when using the WpNewspaper Theme (or other theme), sometimes I feel the left area for the post is too narrow for my content (with pictures), I know that for a single "page", we can set it up to display just a single column without sidebar like:

I want to ask is it possible to do any trick on single entry (blog post, not page), and display it as a single column (omit the side bar).

For example, this blog post:

has sidebars on the right, is it possible to configure the display of sidebar?

Because I feel this feature is important for dispalying big pictures, I can't post every entry with big picture as a "wordpress page", that will be difficult to manage with the droplist of pages.

I hope there's a way to define the display of single entry (by writing some code to "custom" space, or add it to CSS so the sidebar will be invisible?) Would you please help us to add this feature? Thank you very much!!

P.S. I'm using the latest WpNewspaper Theme, it's on a local test install so I can't provide the url but this question is gereral so I post it here..

WP (with GabFire Themes) goes Mobile... - Any experiences with ?

Hi, GabFire Folks !

... its great to be here... I am new and since a couple of days I am checking out the possibilities to implement a Gabfire Theme for a complete data migration from wordpress.com (which I use more than 2 years with round about 800 postings) to an own WP 3.01.

The future no doubt is "mobile". iOS like Android 2.1 and the iPod/iPad hype, same standards like html5 or tablets (like Dell Strike, Android based) let me think more and more about the mobile future of WP blog systems...

Searching in the Gabfire forum with the keyword "mobile" I only get 12 hits... so yet it does not seem a big topic here... I suppose most of us here are still focussing to bring to life and keep running the CMS on the basis of Wordpress... but I think, its worth to look behind the horizone...

If you want get some inspirations, I think its worth to read the article "Wordpress Plugins to Make Your Blog Mobile Friendly" here.

Anybody here with concrete experiences out of praxis ? - I dont think, it makes sense just to start in Point A by "try & error" and maybe end in Point F recognizing, that this specific segment of the mobile web requires total different solutions with huge costs and manpower. Personally I am experienced using traditional websites with all the progress of the Internet as I know it by daily use since 1993.

Actually I start to research here and there how to optimize WP for being competitive on Mobile units. Personally (as cultural journalist) I am mainly content driven, and not like many Tech Geeks focussing heavily on the technical parts. In my understanding, technology always should support human inter-action and not just be "man's toys" or "girlish nice to have things" wasting life time and just making people rich like Steve Jobs (Article of today: "Why does Steve Jobs play fast and loose with iPod touch sales numbers?").

(Rec.: Personally I never us a mobile phone for gaming. My 1st WAP cell phone I had 10 years ago I never used for mobile surfing just because it was cool. And till today I dont use mobile devices for "gambling around" (makes me tired to give these technical aspects a huge amount of time in my life.)).

Many questions come up touching this specific topic:

1.) Basic question: Is WP.org on its own alreaday competitive for the Mobile future? (Not from admin side.... from user side: is the usability of WP 3.01 already fit for a comfortable use on smart phones ?)

2.) If "yes" (ref. 1.):

[a] What is with the traditional plugins (I will use for my new blog at all round about 30-35) for the regular blog system, any collissions to be expected for Mobile devices ?

[b] What has a Gabfire theme to fulfill this need ? - Are the Gabfire themes already fit for the mobile world ?

3.) If "no" (ref. 1.):

[a] What is in the pipline with new updates fro side of Wordpress.org ?

[b] What needs/miss GabFire to make its themes fit for the mobile world ? - Timelines...

4.) What about specific plugins for the "Mobile World" ?

Do we need for each different Device an individual adaption ? E.g. WPTouch for iPhone... (Rec.: Most people in the world cannot afford an iPhone.)

5.) Exist specific test environments (without having all kind of mobile devices in the laboratory) ?

6.) What about total costs ?

[a] Technically: Do we need to calculate extra bandwidth, traffic volume or web disc space if we expand our regular web browser enabled WP to a mobile enabled format ?

[b] personal staff: specific skills for the blog management and development process... ????? (never thought about this aspect before)

[c] capacities: how work intensive is it to cover a blog system with fully functions to enable it as a competitive Mobile platform ? (inclusive developement, test phase)

7.) Will the content for Mobiles require total different demands ? - E.g. only short news intead text intensive postings... using html5 enabled PDFs for Tablets (in the sense of eBook readers) instead regular post/page sites...

8.) What about money earning ? - Which features shall be integrated from side as conent manager to be attractive for mobile users ? - Do we need different kind of advertising ? Or even specific attractions (e.g. games) ?

How to position advertising on the regular WP same covering the Ads space on Mobiles ? What about Google Ads ?

9.) What about the learning curve ? - Exist specific measurement / data mining tools ? Like WP Stats it makes sense to measure seperatelly mobile users... It seems there exist specific service companies already, e.g. Aduity... Do we need such corporations ? - Or exist good plugins for web controlling ?

10.) Exist proofed and successful projects as good examples for small and medium sized businesses (especially out of the segment "News Content, Magazines, Newspapers") to implementing the "mobile" part into a WP blog successfully) ? - Timeline/Milestones, cost planning, technical requirements (e.g. from Internet Providers, Web Design), user feedback (usability tests, research studies) for avoiding high risks would be helpful etc. ...

OK, that's what came up 1st in my mind...

Feel free to complete this question catalogue and hopefully some folks here have concrete answers and experiences to share... :-)

I just installed Disqus for the site (http://theurbn.com) and it's actually really good.

However, I was wondering if anyone had the same issue as I do:

When I am in "Settings" > "General", I do not get the option to 'Save Changes' like I do in 'Customize'. This means that I cannot save the Twitter reactions function which will be very useful.

Also, the plugin seems to have altered some of the PHP. On the homepage the posts do not say '0 comments', '1 comment', '[etc] comments'. It just says 'View Comments'. How do I change this?

My posts are glued to the grey bar...

Does anybody know how to insert a space on every post of my Blog ?
I notice that posts are glued to the grey bar. Since we have many authors, some of them are responsible for not leaving a Breakline at the beginning, so I�d like to post a code at each beginning of any post, or on the way posts are displayed on Wordpress Blognews theme. How could I do that ?

BTW - How could I justify all posts from my Blog, the way they are displayed ?
Kind of putting a command Justify on the beginning and a close tag at the end of post ?

There was some talk a while back about new Gabfire themes being under development once the platform was updated for existing themes. Can someone please tell us what to expect and when to expect it in regard to upcoming themes?

Free Alternatives to Dreamweaver

Hi all,

I recently changed computers so I no longer have Dreamweaver. Instead of going through the hassle of getting a copy of it, I was wondering - is there any free programs that do the same thing? (i.e. ability to edit php, CSS, HTML, etc)

I tried Aptana Studio but it does not have a PHP edit function and is, thus, useless for Wordpress sites.

Any thoughts?

How to Delete Narrow Sidebar on Posts?

I want to have posts without the narrow sidebar.

I want the post and the wide sidebar, only.

Can you possibly show me the code changes needed?

I tried commenting it out, in the page template:

Then I made the Post wrapper wider (I tried different widths -- no luck)

#innerLeft { /* Post wrapper */
float:left;
width:600px; /*501*/
margin-right:9px;

But then the wide sidebar moves to the bottom of the page
(instead of simply moving right where it needs to be).

I am a rookie PHP coder -- thanks for any help.

Restricting categories for some authors posting ?

Gabfire themes are really nice, and I use it on a site which needs responsability. The front page categrories, for instance, should be fed by me and a few other people of our site. But there�s some categories which I would like to let people post. They hardly would appear on front age, unless it has a good article.

Is it possible to hide categories from certain authors ?

Any help is welcomed.

Does anyone knows a way to customize WP dashboard by user in order to get it very clean and simple ?

See my problem:

I run a community Blog which have writters of all ages and knowledge. Some are very smart with computers. Others only write excellent texts. Well, for the guys and ladies which are not smart on computers, I plan to have a very clean and easy dashboard, an easy editor which I�d like to choose the features and buttons for them.

"GOOGLE BLOGGER dashboard is very simple and incredibly fast."

I don�t know if we could define author�s priviledges and create customized dashboards for different people. Do we ?

I was looking for a new theme for a site I run. I searched the internet for something as I wanted to see how other themes worked. I looked at woo themes, but to be honest I could find nothing to match the Themes from Gabfire which I believe are excellent in the field of magazine/newspaper sites.

This is my latest using the Transcript theme. The only thing I will say is that Mehmet does not charge enough for his work. These themes are worth at least double what I paid.

Subscribe2 has basically crapped out help...

Hey all,

I'm having a huge problem. A few weeks ago I made the mistake that I usually avoid, which is to take the sites advice and "upgrade" even though everything is working fine. I upgraded Subscribe2 to the most recent version, and of course nothing has worked since, which means none of my 1000+ subscribers are getting their emails.

Subscribe2, of course, is a free service and offers no support. When people do post on their forums, it's always "the fault" of WP or the theme or the mail server or the hosting provider etc.

Not only is the automated system no longer working, but even when I manually go "mail subscribers" I get an error that says

"Message failed! Check your settings and check with your hosting provider
Could not instantiate mail function." (sic)

Any clue what to do? Obviously fixing this would be great, but ultimately I think I'd like to switch to a different emailing program, even if it means having to pay for it, just as long as it works. Any recommendations for something other than Subscribe2?

As always, any help would be just awesome.
